The tenacious openside flanker kitted out for the famous blue of Grey College in Bloemfontein before his move to Johannesburg where he represented the Lions at U21 level. Bernard then became the starting flanker for the famous South African U20 World Champions team of 2002, with Super Rugby taking him to the Sharks for their 2003 campaign. Johannesburg came calling again as he returned for the Currie Cup in the same year and went onto to represent the Cats in Super Rugby until 2008 until linking up with Grenoble in France, where he played an integral part in their promotion to the Top14 in 2012.
