Schooled at Paarl Boys High, Coetzee has played at all age-group levels for Western Province. A physical player with excellent skills, the hooker then made his debut for the Vodacom Cup team in 2013 and helped the WP U21 team secure the U21 Currie Cup for the first time since 2010.
Coetzee went to New Zealand to link up with the Stormers squad for their match against the Chiefs.
He moved to Kimberley for the 2015 season to join Griquas.
In 2017 Coetzee joined the Sharks and represented the side during the Super Rugby campaign.
