Originally from from the Border region, the lock forward moved to the Western Cape in 2005. Representing Western Province U19 & U21, it was in the 2009 Varsity Cup where Nepgen made a name for himself. The Stellenbosch star then represented the SA Students in the same year, which helped him secure his first professional contract with Griquas in 2010.
