Toulon tackle Leinster in Dublin

The champagne will still be flowing in Dublin from last weekend’s Pro14 final result when Leinster take the field to face Toulon in the next round of the Champions Cup.

The game is scheduled for Good Friday evening and the Irishmen will be full of confidence on their home turf as they enjoy a good run of general form.

Leinster commenced their European campaign against Montpellier (away) with a performance which threw out a strong message to the rest of the competition that Johnny Sexton’s men would be formidable opponents, once again.

Montpellier were dominated in that particular outing, the pressure of Leinster making the prospect of a Montpellier victory seem unrealistic

In Round 2, Leinster received the challenge of Northampton Saints with relevant ease, brushing aside their English counterparts 35-19.

Since then, the men in blue have marched on, winning the Pro14 for the fourth year in row, this time against domestic rivals, Munster.

Toulon opened their campaign in style with a good win over Sale Sharks at the Stade Mayol. The French outfit, at one stage, looked as if they would run away with the match as they enjoyed a 26-0 lead. However, Sale showed their character and fought their way back into the game in the final quarter, scoring two tries, but it was too little, too late for the Premiership side.

That encounter was the last Champions Cup match that Toulon have participated in as they were forced to surrender their Round 2 fixture to Scarlets as a result of Covid-19.

These two teams have met on four occasions in the past, the last one being in 2015 where a hard-fought contest at the Aviva Stadium saw a star-studded Toulon outfit emerge victorious, 20-15.

History has shown that when these two sides collide, a great game of rugby transpires. The first game of the round could very well turn out to be the pick of the round with these two giants battling it out.
