The Rebels tumble at the final hurdle to make the Super Rugby playoffs

The Melbourne Rebels failed to reach the Super Rugby playoffs following back-to-back disappointing results against New Zealand opposition.

The Rebels had a chance to reach the playoffs despite going down 66-0 to the Crusaders last weekend but they were unable to contain the Chiefs who were lead by captain fantastic Sam Cane.


The Chiefs were boosted by the return of All Black lock Brodie Retallick who threw everything at it on his return while Shaun Stevenson ran in a hattrick of tries.

The Chiefs controlled proceedings from start to finish and they eventually ran in nine tries to the Rebels’ one. 


The win for the Chiefs sees them claim a playoff spot in this season's competition.

Shaun Stevenson led the way with a fantastic hat-trick while their other five-pointers came from Sam Cane, Lachlan Boshier, Sean Wainui, Anton Lienert-Brown, Marty McKenzie and former Rebel Debreczeni who also added six conversions.


The one highlight of the game for the Rebels was Matt Phillip's stellar solo try.
