Sam Cane is a New Zealand rugby union player who has had a remarkable journey through the professional ranks of the sport. Recognized as a rising star from a young age, Cane represented his country at various age grades, starting from under 17 and progressing up the ranks.
In his impressive underage career, Cane achieved notable accomplishments, including winning the under 20 world championship and being named Rugby Award Age Group Player of the Year in 2011. His talent and potential were evident early on.
At just 18 years old, Cane made his Super Rugby debut for the Chiefs in 2010, and he played a pivotal role in the team's successful Super Rugby campaign in 2011. His exceptional performances caught the attention of the All Blacks selectors, and he was called up to the national squad for the series against Ireland in 2012. He made his debut in the second match of the series, contributing to the All Blacks' victory.
By the start of 2015, Cane had accumulated 22 international caps and scored 8 tries for the All Blacks. He was an integral part of the team that went on to win the 2015 Rugby World Cup, and he even captained the side in a match against Namibia.
Continuing his success, Cane entered his sixth season with the Chiefs in February 2017 and established himself as a key leader within the team. He was recognized for his outstanding performances by being awarded the Chiefs Players' Player of the Year. He was also part of the All Blacks squad for the NZ Lions series and made notable contributions during the Test series and The Rugby Championship 2017.
In October 2017, Cane signed a contract extension, committing himself to New Zealand Rugby, the Chiefs, and the Bay of Plenty province for an additional four years. He reached significant milestones, accumulating 106 Super Rugby caps and scoring 14 tries in the competition, as well as having 55 test caps heading into the 2018 Rugby Championship.
Unfortunately, in 2018, Cane suffered a neck fracture during a Test against South Africa, requiring surgery and a lengthy recovery period. He made a highly anticipated comeback to the Chiefs in 2019, playing a vital role in guiding the team to the Quarter Finals.
In May 2020, Cane was appointed as the new Captain of the All Blacks, succeeding the retired Kieran Read after the Rugby World Cup 2019. He started in all six of New Zealand's tests in 2020, although the team experienced some unprecedented losses and draws.
Despite the challenges, Cane ended the year with 74 test caps and 14 tries, and he was honored as the All Blacks Player of the Year and the Kelvin R Tremain Player of the Year.
In December 2021, Cane signed a new long-term contract, solidifying his commitment to the All Blacks and domestic rugby in New Zealand until 2025. His dedication and contributions make him an integral part of New Zealand rugby, and he continues to inspire with his leadership and performances on the field.
Ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2023, Cane has been named in the squad for New Zealand.
