Waikato retain the Ranfurly shield after an impressive win over top of the table Hawkes Bay. Waikato were made to work in the first half and Hawkes Bay had opportunities, but in the end Waikato were just too strong. Errors cost Hawkes Bay as Waikato made them pay every time. Sweeney and Reece were a constant threat. Hawkes Bay made so many tackles that eventually the wall was going to break. Waikato have now won three in a row against good opposition and will feel they are building something.
