Italy vs Ireland: A look at the numbers

Italy continued their excellent form in the 6 Nation with a talismanic 31-29 win over Italy earlier today. After a nailbiter against England, an incredible draw against France, Italy have shown they are worth tier 1 status and today, we look at the numbers between the two nations. 

Andy Christie led the number in metres made. The openside flanker was head and shoulders above the rest with his 96 metres only level with Scottish ace Duhan van der Merwe. Van der Merwe also topped the line breaks list with his 2 line breaks.

Jack Dempsey could not be held back, as he beat six defenders on the day, closley followed by teammate and fullback Blair Kinghorn, and George Turner.

Dempsey and Redpaths 13 carries along with Kinghorns 14 carries and van der Merwe's 11 were something to be lauded but were not enough to seal the win. The Scotts were very key at keeping the ball alive, as Dempsey, Redpath and Jones completed three each to top the stats.

It is said the defensive wins matches, and that was again the factor for the Italians. after 18 tackles last week, Michel Lamaro again went above and beyond this time completing 20, closely followed by Ross Vintcent with 17.
