Guinness Pro14 Round 6 disciplinary decisions

Josh Murphy of Leinster Rugby faced a Judiciary Hearing on Wednesday, June 9, to consider the Citing Complaint made against him for an incident that occurred on Friday, June 4 in the Guinness PRO14 Round 5 fixture against Glasgow Warriors.

The incident occurred in the 53rd minute of the game at Scotstoun Stadium, Glasgow. The Citing Commissioner deemed the player to have committed an act of foul play.

The Player had been cited for Law 9.12: A Player must not physically or verbally abuse anyone. Physical abuse includes but is not limited to, biting, punching, contact with the eye or eye area, striking with any part of the arm (including stiff-arm tackles), shoulder, head or knee(s), stamping, trampling, tripping or kicking.

The Disciplinary Panel, comprising Owain Rhys James (Chair), Nigel Williams and Declan Goodwin (all Wales) concluded that while there was contact made to the eye area of the opponent, it was unintentional and part of a fluid motion. The Panel concluded that a low-entry act of foul play had occurred, carrying a four-week suspension.

Having considered all relevant documentation and evidence, including the Players impeccable conduct throughout the process, as well as his genuine remorse shown, mitigation of 50 percent was applied, bringing the ban to two meaningful games.

The Disciplinary Process was presided over by Judicial Officer Jennifer Donovan (Ireland) who concluded that a mid-range act of foul play had occurred, carrying a six-week suspension. Having considered all available evidence, including Match footage, reports from the Referee and TMO, Player statements, medical statements and statements from both teams, mitigation of 50 percent was applied resulting in a ban of 3 meaningful games.
