Argentina U20 38 - 40 England U20
Half-time: 12-28 · Referee: Christopher Allison · 7 July 2026

England U20 held on for a nerve-shredding 40-38 win over Argentina U20 in the pick of the round, surviving a furious Argentine comeback that saw the hosts score the game's final three tries. That Los Pumitas came so close is remarkable given they played more than an hour with fourteen men, Benjamin Ordiz red-carded inside the opening quarter - but England's clinical first half ultimately proved just enough.
England seize control a man up
Argentina made the brighter start, Tomas Dande finishing a stunning solo try in the seventh minute and Federico Serpa converting for an early 7-0 lead. But the game turned on fifteen minutes when Ordiz was shown a straight red card, and England ruthlessly exploited the extra man.
Will Knight crossed on twelve, Hugh Shields converting, and James Pater's try on nineteen edged the visitors ahead. Argentina refused to wilt despite their numerical disadvantage, Manuel Cuneo Camargo powering over from a rolling maul on twenty-six, but the conversion was missed and England pulled clear before the break. Jimmy Staples and Aiden Ainsworth-Cave both scored from close range in the final five minutes of the half, Shields adding both extras, and England turned around 28-12 up.

The lead stretches, then the comeback begins
England looked to have settled matters early in the second period. Ainsworth-Cave grabbed his second on forty-one and Pater his second on forty-nine, Shields converting once, to open a commanding 40-19 cushion with half an hour to play.
But Argentina, extraordinarily, found another gear. Bautista Lescano's close-range try on forty-five had already signalled intent, and after Bautista Benavides was sin-binned, Simon Pfister struck on fifty-one, Serpa converting. When England's own discipline unravelled - Elliot Williams yellow-carded on sixty-eight and Will Knight following on seventy-one - Los Pumitas smelled blood.

A grandstand finish
Lescano crossed again on seventy-one, Manuel Giannantonio converting, and suddenly the margin was down to single digits. Pfister completed his brace on seventy-seven, Giannantonio's conversion cutting the deficit to just two points at 40-38 with the clock red. Argentina had one last surge, but England's scrambling defence held firm to secure a famous, if hugely fortunate, victory.
The numbers underline how close it was. Argentina, despite their long numerical disadvantage, dominated possession (66%) and made more than double England's carries into contact - England's 217 tackles to Argentina's 87 tell the story of a side that spent the second half hanging on. England's 40 points from six tries came off ruthless first-half efficiency; Argentina's six tries and 38 points, a man down for 65 minutes, made this a contest for the ages that the scoreboard barely reflects.
Final word
England will take the win and the momentum, but Argentina's response - six tries with fourteen men, and within a whisker of one of the great comebacks - may prove the more instructive performance of a breathless afternoon.
