Boks preparing for ferocious All Black onslaught, says Le Roux

Springbok fullback Willie Le Roux says the South Africans are preparing for a ferocious attack from the wounded All Blacks as the latter aim to return to winning ways after falling to Ireland 2-1 in the recent series – a result which plunged New Zealand rugby into chaos with assistant coaches John Plumtree and Brad Mooar given their marching orders while calls for Head Coach Ian Foster’s head are ever-increasing in volume.
The Boks face Foster’s charges first in Nelspruit this coming Saturday before locking horns again the following weekend at Ellis Park.
In light of everything, many are saying this year’s Rugby Championship is ripe for the plucking for the men in green but Le Roux says they remain cautious.
“I wouldn’t say it (the Springboks’ Rugby Championship draw) is an advantage,” he said.
“Obviously, we are excited to play at home in front of our supporters in Nelspruit and Johannesburg, and then we have a tour against Australia and Argentina before coming back home for our last Test, so it’s going to be a good challenge for us.
“Matches between the Springboks and All Blacks are always big games, and it is one of the biggest rivalries in world rugby. The fact they come off defeats against Ireland will inspire them even more going into the next few games. I have no doubt they will come here and give their best.
“They’ll definitely want to turn things around, so the important things for us will be to show who we are and to ensure that we do not disappoint our fans.
“But we intend to give our best, and we know the matches will not be a disappointment for anyone.”
A major talking-point regarding the Springboks has been the rise of Damian Willemse who delivered outstanding performances against Wales recently. Comfortable and effective at flyhalf, centre or fullback, Willemse’s versatility is a significant asset for the Boks. Le Roux described his relationship with the 24 year-old, with whom he often competes for the number 15 jersey.
“I wouldn’t say I am a mentor to Damian,” said Le Roux.
“We are in the same team, and we learn from one another. I’m still learning from him and Warrick (Gelant) as well, just as they do from me.
“That said, Damian and I have a good connection and we also come from the school (Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch).”
