Beauden Barrett's yellow card analysis

The Lions and Hurricanes faced off in the 2017 Super Rugby semi-final in what was a replay of last year's final.

Despite being a fantastic game from both sides the main talking point of the second Super Rugby semi final was Beauden Barret's yellow card.

Barrett was penalised for slowing down and disrupting the Lions front foot ball and was given a yellow card for his offence.

The timing of the penalty was at a crucial point for both sides with the Lions trailing by 7 points, with momentum with the home side and the Hurricanes looking to stop the onslaught.

The incident occurred after the Canes cleared from a kickoff and the Lions countered, with some great work from Andries Coetzee and Ruan Combrinck, with the latter being tackled by Beaduen Barrett.

Barrett looked to roll out of the tackle but the flyhalf was, first of all, slowing the Lions ball down as he failed to roll away quickly enough and secondly he pulled the ball with his foot, denying the Lions' front foot attacking ball inside the Canes 22. 

The Hurricanes were clearly under pressure, with the Lions having options left and right.

Before that penalty, the Canes had given away 7 penalties in 25 minutes, 4 of which were in their 22 and 2 of those 4 preventing a potential try. 

After the game, Hurricanes' coach Chris Boyd and captain Dane Coles gave their input on the incident.
