Argentina pull off a famous win over the British and Irish Lions

It was a rough start for coach Andy Farrell as the Lions couldn't find a way through the determined visitors' defence late, who claim their maiden win over the combined team.

Argentina took it to the Lions from the start, both sides missing a host of players, as flyhalf Tomas Albornoz was superb.

Albornoz scored 16 points in the first half, including a sensational try on half-time to give them a 21-10 half-time advantage.

The Lions rallied with two quick tries to hand them the lead early in the second half.

However, a wonder try to replacement Santiago Cordero proved the difference.

Albornoz and excellent number eight Joaquin Oviedo created the chance, with Matias Moroni putting the kick in for Cordero to dive over against the run of play.

Ignacio Mendy struck for the opener in the 12th minute after a defensive lapse provided the space for fullback Santiago Carreras to work his magic and set up his winger.

Tries to Luke Cowan-Dickie and Sione Tuipulotu were denied due to knock-ons as the Lions’ dominant scrum built their territorial advantage.

It allowed centre Bundee Aki to deliver the first try for the hosts, brushing off tacklers for the five-pointer.

This failed to dent the confidence of Argentina, who re-took the lead via the boot of flyhalf  Albornoz.

Two penalties from the flyhalf ticked over the scoreboard before he finished off a stunning try on half-time.

Winger Rodrigo Isgro created the chance with a turnover and break well inside his half, drawing the fullback for Albornoz to race clear for a 21-10 half-time lead. 

The Lions got back into the game after the break were awarded a penalty try for a clear collapsed maul right on Argentina’s line.

Mayco Vivas went to the bin as a result and the hosts had all the momentum.

Ireland lock Tadhg Beirne delighted the home crowd with a well-worked try to give them the lead with just under half an hour to go.

But Argentina refused to panic, and a remarkable try to the replacement outside back Cordero restored the lead.

The Lions had their chances but ran into a dogged defensive display as Argentina made history, claiming their first win over the Lions in their history.
