Rayner formerly represented Old Albanians and the Bedford Blues academy, and began playing rugby for local side Spalding RFC.
From there, the Lincolnshire-born back moved to Old Albanian RFC before getting scouted by Plymouth and finally Nottingham.
Aside from playing at The Bay, Rayner was appointed head coach of local amateur side Nottingham Corsairs in May 2016, tasked with having to re-establish their senior men’s team.
Rayner signed for Nottingham during the summer of 2015 from Plymouth Albion.
