Starting his career in the Durban, Downey made his debut for the Sharks in the 2008 Vodacom Cup. Searching for more game-time, the flanker headed to Griquas in 2010 where he spent three seasons and represented the Cheetahs in their 2012 Super Rugby campaign. Justin then returned to the Sharks for the 2013 Currie Cup.
