A centre or wing primarily, Stanley hails from Brisbane in Australia. The brother of All Black Benson Stanley, Winston's career began in New Zealand where he played in the ITM Cup for Auckland. Having spent four year in Auckland and making just 6 Super Rugby appearances, the skillful centre packe dhis bags and headed to Australia in 2012 where he took up a contract with the Western Force.

Despite growing up in Australia, Stanley played in the 2009 IRB Junior World Championships as a member of the New Zealand side.

After showing an impressive season when he joined Harlequins in 2015, Winston re-signed with club in August 2016 before retiring from rugby in 2018.
