Pita-Gus Sowakula is a powerful and versatile loose forward known for his impactful performances on the rugby field. Born on October 26, 1994, in Lautoka, Fiji, Sowakula has made a name for himself in both rugby and basketball.

In his youth, Sowakula excelled in basketball and represented Fiji in the 2012 FIBA Oceania Under 19 Championships. He also featured for the Otago Nuggets, showcasing his skills on the basketball court. His athletic ability and versatility caught the attention of rugby scouts.

Sowakula made his mark in rugby when he was signed as an injury replacement player for the Gallagher Chiefs in 2018. He made his Super Rugby debut as a substitute, replacing Liam Messam in the 66th minute against the Highlanders in Hamilton. His performance impressed the coaches and set the stage for his future success.

Following his impressive stint as an injury replacement, Sowakula earned a full-time spot in the Gallagher Chiefs squad. Since then, he has been a regular feature in the game day 23, showcasing his power and skill as a loose forward.

In addition to his club achievements, Sowakula represents the Taranaki provincial team in New Zealand. He made his professional debut for Taranaki in 2017 at the age of 22. He has defended the Ranfurly Shield with Taranaki and was recognized for his potential, winning the Most Promising Player of the Year award at the TRFU Amber and Black awards.

Sowakula's journey in basketball began at a young age, and he continued to play amateur basketball in Fiji, representing various teams. He made his senior basketball international debut for Fiji in 2013 at the age of 19, becoming one of the youngest players to represent the country. He participated in the 2013 Oceania Championships and contributed to Fiji's basketball success.

Raised by his uncle Ropate Robanakadavu from a young age, Sowakula attended Suva Grammar School and Central College Lautoka, where he developed his skills in both basketball and rugby union. He demonstrated his talent early on by being selected for the Nadro rugby league team and the Fiji national sevens training squad.

Pita-Gus Sowakula's combination of athleticism, versatility, and physicality has made him a formidable presence on the rugby field. Whether representing the Chiefs in Super Rugby or Taranaki in the Mitre 10 Cup, he continues to make an impact with his performances, contributing to the success of his teams.
