Cocnrane was a former Scotland Under-21 captain and played for Rotherham Titans before moving to Doncaster Knights and links up with former Bedford teammate Josh Bassett at Wasps. Cochrane made 75 appearances during the three years he was with Doncaster Knights before moving to Bedford Blues and scored 60 points.

He was also voted player of the year for both Doncaster Knights and previously for Rotherham Titans. The 30 year old hooker made 19 appearances for Blues and was instrumental in helping them to reach the Championship play-offs. It was during his time at Blues that he changed position from flanker to hooker.

In January 2014, Cochrane returns to Scotland to rejoin with his hometown club Edinburgh Rugby for the 2014–15 season

The Scotland age-grade internationalist made his Edinburgh debut off the bench against Ospreys in the 2014/15 league opener, and surpassed the 50 cap mark – as well as scoring a try-brace – against Timisoara Saracens, in the home European Challenge Cup match in 2017.

Cochrane penned a two-year contract extension ahead of the 2016/17 season.

In January 2018 he was called into the Scotland 6 Nations squad ahead as injury cover for George Turner.
