Highly rated in his native New Zealand, Paterson agreed to join the Blues in 2010. Paterson has represented New Zealand at under 21 level, but, should he complete the necessary three years, Paterson will be eligible for Wales. Prior to his move to Wales, Paterson was a regular for the Crusaders and the Hurricanes, with many tipping him to eventually make the New Zealand senior squad.
After completing three years’ residency at the beginning of the 2012/13 Pro12 season, Michael became eligible to play for Wales. However, in 2014 he was selected to play for England against the Barbarians, qualifying through an English grandfather.
Two weeks later, Michael played for England in a second non-capped match, during their summer tour to New Zealand, against his former side Canterbury.
