Fonotia's performances at domestic level have seen him named in the Crusaders Wider Training Squad for the 2013 Super Rugby season.
He has also made more than 50 appearances for Tasman Makos in the ITM Cup, scoring in a 36-32 loss to Taranaki in the 2014 final.
Fonotia became a regular fixture in a star-studded Crusaders backline since making his Super Rugby debut at the start of the 2014 season.
He can play centre or wing, and decided to leave Crusaders at the end of the 2016 season to join the Welsh side Ospreys.
Fonotia made 29 appearances for the region, scoring six tries before signing a deal to join Scarlets for the 2017/18 season.
Signed initially as cover for Wales test centres Jonathan Davies and Hadleigh Parkes, Fonotia had 19 games for the Scarlets, scoring three tries.
He departed Scarlets in August 2020 to rejoin the Tasman Mako. As of August 2020, Fonotia has 12 test caps for Samoa.
He heads into the 2020 Mitre 10 Cup season with 65 appearances for Tasman Makos.
