Van Niekerk made his Bok debut at Newlands against the All Blacks, before even setting foot on the field for a Currie Cup or Super Rugby match. With freakish pace and skills, the loose forward went on to earn 51 caps for the Springboks. Representing the Lions in Currie Cup and Super Rugby from 2001-2003, Joe then moved to the Stormers and Western Province for four seasons before heading back to the Lions in 2008. Looking for a new challenge, Joe then signed with Toulon in late 2008, where he has became a crowd favourite, taking the team to two French Top 14 finals and winning the 2013 Heineken Cup.
