Moananu was identified in 2018 as a talented player co captaining the De La Salle 1st XV in the Auckland 1A Competition.
The following year, he joined the Steelers Academy and played his Premier Club Rugby out of the Manurewa Rugby Football Club.
At 17 years of age, Moananu Captained the Counties Manukau U19 Representative Team at the National Jock Hobbs Memorial Tournament and earned himself a full 2020 Provincial Union Contract from his performances.
He has also been identified as a player of interest for the NZ U20’s and Chiefs U20 teams.
In 2020, he was named in Counties Manukau senior squad for the 2020 Mitre 10 Cup season.
