After coming through the ranks at Gala RFC and Galashiels Academy, Hunter represented Scotland at under-17, 18 and 19 level before injury ruled out of an under-20 campaign. His bid to challenge for a first-team place with Edinburgh Rugby was initially hampered by the continuation of the age-grade injury, but the 2011/12 season presented the young Borderer with opportunities to to showcase his potential, before he was awarded the 2012 Macphail scholarship, which saw him spend 18 weeks training with the Canterbury RFU over the summer months.
