Ed Holmes, born on December 27, 1995, is a professional rugby union player who primarily plays in the second row for Bristol Rugby.
Holmes made his senior debut for Exeter Chiefs in the LV Cup against the Cardiff Blues in February 2015. He also had loan spells with Cornish All Blacks and Plymouth Albion, where he made over 50 appearances before joining Bristol on March 26, 2018.
Initially joining Bristol on a short-term loan from Exeter, Holmes impressed in his debut for the club in a 60-17 victory against Nottingham Rugby. His performance earned praise from Bristol head coach Pat Lam for his contributions on the field. Following his loan spell, Holmes made his move to Bristol permanent in April 2018.
In the 2017-18 season, Holmes played a crucial role in Exeter Chiefs' victory over Bath Rugby in the final of the Anglo-Welsh Cup. In the previous season, he had also featured in the Anglo-Welsh cup final, but Exeter lost to Leicester Tigers on that occasion.
Since joining Bristol Bears, Holmes has continued to thrive under the leadership of Pat Lam. He has showcased his versatility as a back five utility forward and has become known for his physicality, strong ball-carrying abilities, and proficiency in the lineout. During the 2018-19 season, he made 17 appearances in the Gallagher Premiership and continued to feature prominently in the 2019-20 campaign.
One of Holmes' standout moments came in December 2020 during a dramatic home draw with London Irish at Ashton Gate, where he scored a sensational solo try.
