Heffernan attended south Dublin school Blackrock College and was a member of the 2009 Leinster School Senior Cup winning side captained by Jordi Murphy.
He made his senior debut against the Scarlets in March 2012 as a member of the Connacht Academy and shortly before he transitioned from the back row to hooker.
The Ballina-native, who has represented Ireland Under-20’s and Emerging Ireland, has been a member of the Connacht senior squad since the beginning of the 2013/14 season.
Heffernan signed a two-year contract extension in January 2017. His career has gone from strength-to-strength since he transitioned from the backrow to hooker and has represented Ireland Under-20’s and Emerging Ireland.
In May 2017, an uncapped Heffernan was included in the Ireland Summer tour squad that would play tour USA & Japan.
He made his test debut off the bench against USA.
In January 2019, he signed a contract extension with Connacht and featured in every game for Connacht in the 2019 season.
Heffernan was named in the Six Nations 2020 Ireland squad.
As of June 2020, the hooker has made 129 appearances for Connacht and has scored 25 appearances for the Irish province.
