Former Canterbury B first five Brad Mooar path to higher honours was blocked by All Blacks star Andrew Mehrtens and later became a Canterbury age-group coach. He played for Mid-Canterbury from 1997-1999 and then played overseas before returning to Christchurch to take up coaching.
Mooar left his career as a lawyer to pursue a career in coaching and started his coaching career with the Christchurch Rugby Club Colts team in 2007, and he progressed onto the Club’s premier team before becoming the Assistant Coach of the Canterbury Colts in 2011. In 2012 he moved to South Africa to coach the Eastern Province Kings to a Currie Cup Division 1 title, then become Assistant Coach of the Southern Kings Super Rugby side under Matt Sexton’s leadership.
He returned to New Zealand at the end of that season to take the Southland role. Mooar then joined the Crusaders coaching staff in 2015, as an Assistant coach, under Todd Blackadder replacing Aaron Mauger.
Mooar helped the Crusaders to back to back Super Rugby titles in 2017 and 2018 under Scott Robertson having been in charge of the side's attack as well as strategy and tactics. His success with the Crusaders drew attention from the Scarlets who signed Mooar on for outing going Scarlets' head Wayne Pivac.
He will link up with the side following the conclusion of the 2019 Super Rugby season. His time with the Scarlets did not last long as the All Blacks came knocking after Ian Foster was announced as the new All Blacks head coach.
Mooar was confirmed as one of Foster's new assistants after New Zealand Rugby reached an agreement with the Scarlets.
In 2022, he left the side following a coaching reshuffle.
