Jones has been something of a late bloomer, having started out at Llandovery and only making his first league start for the Scarlets in 2016, by which time he was already 24.

Llandovery born and bred Wyn Jones had made 90 appearances for his home club before the start of the 2016-17 season, scoring 10 tries over six professional seasons with the Principality Premiership side.

Jones’ first regional appearance was off the bench against Gloucester Rugby in a 13-7 victory in 2013-14 season and also featured, again as a replacement, in the last round of the LV Cup campaign against opponents London Irish in the final pool game of the 2013-14 campaign.

He was a mainstay of Scarlets' pack during the 2016/17 season playing 28 competitive games including appearances from the bench in both the PRO12 semi final and final in Dublin. In May 2017, the internationally uncapped Jones was named in Robin Mc Bryde's summer tour squad to play Samoa & Tonga.

His first Test start also came against Tonga in November 2018, while he came off the bench in the first two games of his country’s 2019 Six Nations Grand Slam triumph. That was the year that everything changed for Jones, forcing his way up the hierarchy to be first choice for Wales under Warren Gatland at the 2019 World Cup, the coach’s final competition in charge.

After his 100th appearance for Scarlets, Jones signed a new deal in January 2021 to remain at the club. He played in every game as Wales reached the semi-final, starting all but the pool encounter with Uruguay and the third-place play-off against New Zealand.

While Wales struggled in 2020, Jones was instrumental in their bounceback in 2021. He was Player of the Match in the opening victory against Ireland, before scoring a crucial try a week later as they came from behind to beat Scotland.

He provided the foundation of the Wales pack as they claimed the 2021 Six Nations title, with their scrum absolutely flawless, conceding just one penalty on their own ball all Championship.

In May 2021, Jones gained selection for the British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa that same year.

He made his Lions debut against Japan at Murrayfield and featured in three tour games in South Africa, scoring against South Africa A before the test series started.
