Wandisile Simelane, born on 21 March 1998 in Johannesburg, South Africa, is an exceptional South African rugby union player. He primarily plays as a centre or wing, utilizing his impressive speed, agility, and skills to make an impact on the field.
Simelane's rugby journey began at the age of 11 when he picked up a rugby ball. Although he initially focused on athletics and excelled in the 100m sprint, his passion for rugby grew over time. His talent caught the eye while attending Jeppe High School for Boys, where he showcased his abilities and earned recognition. He had the privilege of representing SA Schools and the Lions Craven Week side, demonstrating his potential at a young age.
During his two years of playing first-team rugby at Jeppe, Simelane left a lasting impression not only with his speed and skills but also with his kicking ability. Boasting an impressive kick percentage of over 80%, he showcased his versatility as a player.
Following his school career, Simelane signed a two-year deal with the Lions and made his Varsity Cup debut for Wits in 2017. He continued to develop his game and made significant strides, culminating in a successful 2019 Currie Cup campaign. He started in every game for the Lions, contributing to their journey to the final.
Despite facing challenges, including a minor knee ligament injury and the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Simelane's hard work and determination paid off. He made a strong comeback during the Super Rugby Unlocked competition, showcasing his best form.
In a standout performance against Griquas, Simelane demonstrated his attacking prowess by scoring a fantastic try. He received the ball on the wing, executed a chip ahead, and outsprinted the cover defense. In addition to his try, he also made four try assists, a feat achieved by only a select few in South Africa. His impact was evident as he accumulated an impressive 158 meters, beat 10 defenders, and made seven line breaks in just two starts during Super Rugby Unlocked.
Simelane's exceptional performances and dedication did not go unnoticed. In June 2021, he was named in South Africa's 46-man squad for the British and Irish Lions Tour, a testament to his skills and potential at the highest level of the game.
As Wandisile Simelane continues to evolve as a player, his speed, agility, and attacking abilities make him a valuable asset for the Bulls and the Blue Bulls. With his outstanding performances and recognition at the national level, he has the potential to make a lasting impact on the field and contribute to the success of his teams.
