Mathie was appointed head coach of Griquas ahead of the 2020-21 season, taking over from Brent Ranse van Rensburg, under whom he served as assistant coach.
As a player, Mathie represented the Bulls, Sharks, Leeds Carnegie, Sale Sharks and Eastern Province Kings before retiring in 2013.
In September 2021, he was appointed head coach of Major League Rugby side, New England Free Jacks.
