Ruan Smith is a talented prop who has made his mark in the world of rugby. Hailing from the Western Cape in South Africa, he emerged from one of the toughest rugby nurseries in the region. Smith's rugby journey has taken him across continents and seen him represent multiple teams at various levels.
During his late teens, Smith split his time between Brisbane and Cape Town, showcasing his exceptional skills and earning recognition as a standout player. He achieved a rare feat of representing two countries at the schoolboy level, having been selected for both the Australian and South African sides in consecutive years.
With his promising talent, Smith became part of the Stormers, Reds, and Force Academy systems, where he continued to develop and refine his game. In 2012, he earned his first Super Rugby caps while playing for the Western Australian franchise.
After his stint with the Brumbies, Smith sought new challenges and signed with Toyota Verblitz in Japan's Top League at the end of the 2016 Super Rugby season. He later joined the Sunwolves' Super Rugby squad in December 2017 but departed in February due to family reasons.
Smith's rugby journey led him back to Australia, where he signed with the Reds. Over the course of two seasons and 27 appearances, he made valuable contributions to the team. In 2019, Smith made a move to the Melbourne Rebels, further enriching his rugby career.
Currently, Smith finds himself playing for the Lions, a team he shares with his brother. His experience, versatility, and skill as a prop make him an asset to the Lions' squad. As he continues to ply his trade with the Lions, Smith's dedication and passion for the game continue to shine through, and he remains an integral part of the team's success.
