The Bulls pivot shot to prominence in 2009 when he came on for the Boks to slot a 55 metre penalty in injury time which clinched the series against the British Lions. One of the most accurate goal-kickers in Springbok history, he guided the national team to the Tri-Nations title in 2009 and won consecutive Super Rugby titles with the Bulls.
He did however experience a dip in form, allowing other, younger fly halves to move ahead of him in the pecking order. In 2013 he was signed by French Top 14 side Stade Francais.
Recent excellent performances for Stade Francais have led to an inclusion in the Springboks extended training squad and he remains an option for Heyneke Meyer at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Steyn made one appearance for the Springboks during the 2015 Rugby World Cup and continues to be regular in the Stade Francais side.
Steyn made 124 appearances for the Bulls and is one of the few players to score more the 1 000 points in Super Rugby (1,467).
After 104 appearances for Stade Francais, Steyn signed a new one-year deal with the Paris-based side - with an option of an additional year.
In May 2019, Steyn signed to re-join the Bulls for the 2020 Super Rugby season.
June 2021 saw him being named in South Africa's 46-man squad for the British and Irish Lions Tour. He turned out for South Africa A team who managed a 17-13 victory over Warren Gatland's charges.
Steyn came off the bench in the deciding third test against the British and Irish Lions two slot two penalties to guide the Springboks to a 19-16 victory over the tourists. It was the second time Steyn slotted a match-winning penalty against the Lions having done so in his second test match in 2009.
Steyn featured once more off the bench for the Springboks during the 2021 Rugby Championship before announcing his retirement from test rugby in October 2021.
Steyn retired as the Springboks' second highest points scorer behind Percy Montgomery. At the time of his retirement from test rugby, he was in 19th place in overall test scorer ranks in international rugby and 16th out of the Tier 1 points scorers.
While his two match-winning penalties against the British and Irish Lions were among his greatest achievements on the test stage, Steyn also scored 31 points against the All Blacks back in 2009 as the Springboks beat New Zealand 31-19.
The Springbok great announced his retirement from test rugby in 2021.
November of the same year, he signed a contract extension with the Bulls until 2023.
