Although educated at Grey College, it was only after school that van der Spuy got noticed when he headed to the Western Province Rugby Institute in Stellenbosch. Making his senior debut in the 2011 Vodacom and Currie Cup, the utility back starred for the Vodacom Cup-winning side of 2012 and is becoming a regular in the senior team with his ability to play fly-half, inside centre and outside centre.
Van der Spuy continued to represent Western Province in the Currie and Vodacom Cup before making his debut in Super Rugby for the Stormers.
At the end of the 2014 season, he joined the Cheetahs and was loaned out to the Griquas.
He still made appearances for the Cheetahs during the 2015 Super Rugby season.
In 2016 he was named in the Cheetahs Super Rugby squad.
In 2017 there was concerns over Van der Spuy's future when he was concussed in a pre-season clash against the Stormers in Harare.
After seeing specialists back and sustained spells of dizziness and headaches van der Spuy called time on his playing career.
Van der Spuy has joined the Cheetahs' Under-21 coaching staff.
