Kyle Douglas Steyn, born on January 29, 1994, is a professional rugby union player who holds dual South African and Scottish citizenship. He plays as a centre or wing for the Glasgow Warriors in the United Rugby Championship and represents the Scotland national team. Steyn was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and moved to Scotland in 2019. He qualifies to play for Scotland through his mother, who hails from Glasgow.
Steyn began his professional career representing the Griquas in the Currie Cup and Rugby Challenge in South Africa in 2017 and 2018. He joined the Glasgow Warriors in the United Rugby Championship and has been an integral part of the team since then. In August 2022, he was named the captain of the Glasgow Warriors by head coach Franco Smith.
Steyn signed with the Glasgow Warriors in February 2019, after previously playing for Scotland 7s. He made his debut for the club in a 38-34 victory over the Cardiff Blues shortly after signing. His performances at the club earned him recognition from the fans, as he shared the Warrior of the Month award for March 2019 with Stafford McDowall, another centre for the team.
After a 14-month hiatus from rugby due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a long-term injury, Steyn returned to action in the 2021 Guinness PRO14 Rainbow Cup. He made an impact by scoring in his return to Scotstoun and played a crucial role in securing the 1872 Cup for the Warriors in a 29-19 win over Edinburgh.
Steyn has also represented Scotland in sevens rugby, participating in six HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series tournaments. He made his international debut off the bench against France in March 2020 and achieved a historic feat in his first start for Scotland. Steyn scored four tries in a 60-14 victory over Tonga at BT Murrayfield, becoming the first men's player since Gavin Hastings to accomplish this feat and the first to do so at the home of Scottish rugby.
Before pursuing a professional rugby career, Steyn studied at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. In addition to his time with the Griquas, he captained the team during their 2018 Currie Cup campaign.
Despite being born in South Africa, qualifies to represent Scotland through his mother, who is from Glasgow. He has been a part of the Scotland national rugby sevens team since 2018.
In March 2019, Steyn received a call-up to Scotland's Six Nations squad as a result of injuries to Blair Kinghorn and Tommy Seymour, both of whom are wingers. He was once again called up to the Scotland squad for the 2020 Six Nations Championship. Steyn earned his first full senior cap for Scotland in a Six Nations match against France on March 8, 2020. Scotland emerged victorious in the match with a score of 28-17.
Notably, on his first start for Scotland in October 2021, Steyn made history by scoring four tries in a match against Tonga, which Scotland won convincingly with a score of 60-14.
Ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2023, Steyn has been named in the squad for Scotland.
