Kyle Sinckler, born on March 30, 1993, is an English professional rugby union player who currently plays as a tighthead prop for the Bristol Bears in the Premiership and represents the England national team. Sinckler's rugby journey began at a young age when he started playing the sport at eight years old in Battersea, London. His talent and aggression on the field led him to join the Harlequins Academy at the age of 13, where he developed his skills and progressed through the club's ranks.
Sinckler made his debut for Harlequins during the 2011-2012 season, and although he initially had limited game time, his potential was evident. He went on loan to Richmond, where he played a significant role in the team's promotion to National League 1. Returning to Harlequins, Sinckler became a valuable rotation player, showcasing his abilities and contributing to the team's success. He played a crucial role in Harlequins' victorious 2012-2013 LV Cup campaign, featuring in several games, including the semi-final against Bath.
Sinckler's rise continued as he represented England at various youth levels, including under-16, under-18, under-19, and under-20. He was part of the England U20 team that competed in the Six Nations Championship in 2012 and 2013, securing the title on both occasions. His talent and potential caught the attention of selectors, and he earned a spot in the England senior squad for their summer tour to New Zealand in 2013, marking a significant milestone in his career.
In November 2016, Sinckler made his international debut for England against South Africa. He quickly established himself as a valuable member of the team and was part of the successful England squad that clinched the Six Nations Championship in 2017. His impressive performances for both Harlequins and England earned him a place in the British & Irish Lions squad for their tour of New Zealand in the same year, despite having only eight England caps at the time.
Sinckler's inclusion in the Lions squad was a testament to his exceptional abilities and potential. He made a significant impact during the tour, featuring in all three tests against New Zealand and contributing to the team's performances. Although the series ended in a draw, Sinckler's performances earned him recognition and respect on the international stage.
Following the Lions tour, Sinckler continued to excel for both club and country. He played a crucial role in England's campaigns, including the Rugby World Cup in Japan in 2019, where he made six appearances, including the final. However, he was forced to leave the final early due to a head injury.
Sinckler's dedication and talent were further acknowledged when he was called up as injury cover for the British & Irish Lions squad in 2021. Despite missing out on the initial selection, his contributions and performances earned him a place in the squad, highlighting his resilience and value as a player.
Off the field, Sinckler is known for his passionate and emotional approach to the game, which has occasionally led to incidents and criticism. However, his determination and commitment to his craft remain unwavering, and he continues to be a formidable presence in the front row. With his combination of power, skill, and tenacity, Kyle Sinckler is a force to be reckoned with in the world of rugby, both for his club and on the international stage, including his involvement with the British & Irish Lions.
Ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2023, Sinckler has been named in the squad for England.
