Born in Invercargill, New Zealand, Wilson plies his trade primarily as a fullback but can also comfortably feature in the flyhalf berth.
His professional career began in 2003 with Southland in New Zealand's domestic competition. He first played for the side in 2003 and that same year he made his debut in Super Rugby for the Brumbies for whom he played eight games.
He had 18 appearances for the Highlanders in 2007-08 and one game for the Chiefs in 2009 before spending three seasons with Bourgoin in France.
In the summer of 2012, Northampton Saints signed Wilson from Bourgoin.
Northampton Saints confirmed that Wilson will be leaving the club at the end of the 2016/17 campaign. He made 95 appearances during a five-year spell with Northampton Saints, which coincided with the Club winning its first Aviva Premiership title in 2013-14.
In October 2017, Wilson signed a three-month contract with Bath.
Wilson impressed at during his time at Bath and in December Bath confirmed he would stay with the club for the remainder of the season.
He made 13 appearances for Bath before returning to Southland before the 2018 Mitre 10 Cup. In November 2018, Wilson re-signed with Bath Rugby until the end of the season.
The versatile back made 26 appearances for the Club before the club confirmed that he would leave at the end of the 2018/19 season to join Top League side Sagamihara DynaBoars.
Wilson has played over 250 games throughout the world which included 75 for Southland between 2003 at 2018. In 2011 he landed a drop goal to win Southland the Ranfurly Shield.
July 2021 saw him being appointed as assistant attack coach of Southland Stags for the 2021 NPC competition.
