Able to play lock or in the back row, Britz’s provincial career began with the Cheetahs in the 1999 Currie Cup. A superb Super Rugby season for the Cheetahs in 2004 then saw the forward making his Test debut against Ireland in the same year and winning the 2004 Tri-Nations with the Springboks. 2005 saw a move to the Stormers and Western Province where Gerrie spent two seasons before his move to Perpignan in late 2007. Britz spent five seasons with the French team, earning 111 caps and helping them secure the 2009 Top 14 Championship title. Britz retired from Professional rugby at the conclusion of the 2011/2012 season.
