Frederik Johannes Zeilinga, commonly known as Fred Zeilinga, was born on 11 December 1992 in Ladysmith, South Africa. Standing at 1.75 meters tall and weighing 82 kilograms, Zeilinga attended Glenwood High School in Durban.
An immensely talented fly-half, Zeilinga made an exceptional start to his rugby career. At the age of 18, he made his senior debut for the Sharks in the 2011 Vodacom Cup. Displaying a level of maturity beyond his years, Zeilinga seamlessly transitioned to senior rugby and earned his first caps in Super Rugby and the Currie Cup in 2013.
In May 2015, Zeilinga signed a contract to join the Free State Cheetahs, a prominent team based in Bloemfontein. His attacking style of play aligned perfectly with the Cheetahs' game plan under coach Franco Smith, making him their first-choice fly-half.
Zeilinga's stellar performances during the 2017 Super Rugby campaign caught the attention of selectors, and he received a call-up to represent South Africa A in a match against the French Barbarians in June. Alongside his teammate Neil Marais, Zeilinga showcased exceptional kicking abilities, contributing to the Cheetahs boasting one of the highest kicking percentages overall during the 2017 Super Rugby season.
Following his successful tenure with the Cheetahs, Zeilinga ventured to Japan to join the Canon Eagles. However, he returned to South Africa in 2021 to join the Lions. It is worth noting that Zeilinga is currently affiliated with the Sharks.
Throughout his career, Zeilinga has consistently exhibited his skills as a talented and composed fly-half. His ability to adapt to the demands of senior rugby at a young age and his impressive performances have earned him recognition both domestically and internationally.
