While attending school in the catchment area of the Golden Lions, Booysen was selected to represent the team at the premier high school rugby union competition, the Under-18 Craven Week in both the 2009 tournament held in East London and the 2010 tournament in Welkom.
The flanker worked himself up into the starting line-up of the Currie Cup side, making his debut in Round Two against the Pumas.
He was called into the Lions 2016 Super Rugby squad, where he would make his Super Rugby debut against the Chiefs, he made one other appearance for the Lions that year.
He was re-selected into the Lions squad ahead of the 2017 Super Rugby tournament.
