Waterman plays for England rugby union and sevens teams. Winning multiple 6 Nations championship, becoming world champion in 2014.
Danielle is the daughter of Jim, who played for Bath. At Palmerston North High she was one of the few girls to play with the boys.
She played for the South West regional squad when she returned to England ans was selected to the England Senior Academy at the age of 15.
Danielle made her Test debut in 2003 against Ireland. At the time, 18-year-old, Waterman became the youngest girl to represent her country.
She won England's Most Promising Player Award in 2006 and was the national sides vice-captain when England won the 2012 Women's European Championship.
After winning silver medals at the 2006/2010 World Cup, she became World Champion at the 2014 Womens World Cup, scoring a try in the final against Canada.
She was a member of the team that received the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award. Waterman holds a Level 3 Rugby Union coaching certificate. In 2014, she signed a professional contract with the England 7's to prepare for the 2016 Olympics.
Following some concerns with injury, she returned to the field in April 2016 at the Canada 7's scoring a try in her first game in the pool.
She went on to win the series tournament with her being selected in the team of the series.
Waterman was selected for the 2017 6 Nations squad before being called in to the squad that would represent England at the 2017 Women's World Cup.
In May 2018, Waterman announced her retirement from international rugby with immediate effect at the age of 33.
She retired at sixth on the all-time list of England Women’s appearances with her 82 caps. She is also one of the leading Red Roses try scorers, having crossed the line 47 times.
