Baden Wardlaw was a late developer in the sport, making the Steamers in 2017 at the age of 27.

He has quickly become a leader in the group and a key contributor to their success in 2019. The Rotorua player was co-captain of Layton McMillan’s successful team in the Hong Kong 10s, and was called in as injury cover to the Chiefs in 2018, and playing in the development side.

A fitness-fan, Wardlaw has competed in the Crossfit Games

In 2019, he realised his lifelong dream when he was named in the Blues team for the 2020 Super Rugby season.

However, medical checks showed that he has three fused vertebrae in his neck, and after further tests and extensive expert opinions, the advice was that he should not play rugby again.

He announced his immediate retirement from rugby because of the historic medical condition.
