South Africa were made to work extremely hard in their opening match of the World Rugby Under 20 Championship as they edged a resilient Georgia side 33-27. Both sides crossed for two first half tries, with a Georgian penalty giving them a surprise 17-12 lead at the break. The Baby Boks started the second half strongly, with two early scores seeing them hit the front 26-17. Georgia pulled three points back with a penalty, but South Africa ran in their fifth try for a 33-20 advantage heading into the final quarter. South Africa picked up a yellow card, with Georgia capitalizing almost immediately with a try to reduce the deficit to just six points with around 7 minutes remaining. However, the comeback was not to be as the Baby Boks held on for a hard fought victory.
