Who is the Gallagher Premiership rugby all time record try scorer?
- 1199
The 2022/23 Gallagher Premiership Rugby season saw the first centurion in the competition’s history as Chris Ashton moved to triple figures for tries.
The England great called time on his career after scoring a remarkable 101 tries over spells with six different English clubs, while he also scooped the Top 14’s single season record thanks to a one-year spell in France, not to mention his place at the top of the Investec Champions Cup’s all-time record try-scoring charts.
All that gives Ashton a strong case for being the best finisher in recent club rugby history, but he faced plenty of competition for his place at the summit of the English game.
His two closest challengers for Premiership Rugby’s top try-scorers are two more wingers, England pair Tom Varndell and Mark Cueto.

And then in terms of active players, it is Ashton’s good friend, Harlequins and England scrum-half Danny Care, who has notched 85 tries – a remarkable return for a No.9.
Another 16 tries to overhaul Ashton might be beyond Care, but five would be enough to catch Cueto on the podium.

A look a little further down the top ten, and another active player, Gloucester Rugby’s Jonny May, comes in at six with 76 tries. Now retired from international rugby, he has a chance to move up the list even further.
