Weekend Round Up

After a full weekend of European domestic rugby, we look back at some of the biggest performances and top performers of the weekend.

Guiness Pro12

We begin by looking at the Pro12, where Connacht put in what was easily the performance of the weekend in beating old foes Munster. They may have won by just six points, with 12-18 the final score, but Connacht were by far the superior team on the night. It could have been more, but in the end a fantastic Bundee Aki try secured the win late on.

The biggest winning margin was secured on Friday night by Edinburgh, beating the Dragons by 19 points, 32-13. The Scottish side were also top try scorers for the weekend, crossing the whitewash four times on their way to a valuable bonus point win.

Aviva Premiership

There were a couple of tight finishes in England this weekend, as well as a number of bigger victories. The match of the weekend from the Aviva Premiership was Exeter vs Harlequins, where both teams contributed to the thrilling 26-25 final scoreline in favour of Exeter. Quins managed to bag 4 tries, but the boot of Gareth Steenson saw Exeter just edge it, Steenson having the most successful penalties in the league this weekend.

Top scorers this week were Saracens, who dominated the full 80 against Worcester to win 48-18. Unsurprisingly the Sarries men were also top try scorers, dotting down no less than six times.

Top14

Finally we move to the Top14 in France, where Toulon put in the performance of the weekend to beat Clermont by 26 points away from home. Clermont are usually so tough to beat at the Stade Marcel Michelin, but they could never get going in the face of bruising physicality from Toulon. Four tries for the visitors, including a last second Drew Mitchell score, secured the bonus point.

Yann Lesgourges was top try scorer in the league this weekend, grabbing three tries in Bordeaux’s big win over Pau.
