Wasps edge Edinburgh in Challenge Cup quarter-final

Wasps progress to Challenge Cup semi-finals after coming out on top of an enthralling tussle with Edinburgh Rugby at DAM Health Stadium on Saturday.

Wasps will play the winner of Lyon against Glasgow Warriors in the last four.

Jimmy Gopperth scored a try and knocked over 14 points from the tee in the victory with Biyi Alo, Tom West and Alfie Barbeary all grabbing five-pointers.

Ben Vellacott, Adam McBurney, and Magnus Bradbury, all dotted down for the hosts who just fell short. Emiliano Boffelli scored 15 points from the tee.

Wasps nudged ahead seven minutes into the game through a penalty from fly-half Gopperth, but Boffelli  Edinburgh were quickly level as wing also slotted from the tee.

Edinburgh grabbed the game’s first try on 13 minutes as scrum-half Vellacott finished in the corner.

Gopperth provided Wasps with an instant response finding a way through the Edinburgh defence and over the line with some neat footwork.

McBurney dotted in the 25th minute after enterprising work from captain Grant Gilchrist to earn a penalty.

Edinburgh took a seven-point lead into the break with Boffelli adding a further three shortly after half time.

Wasps' prop Alo crashed over following a quickly taken penalty, and another Gopperth penalty of the game levelled the scores at 20-20.

The two sides traded tries before Wasps edged ahead with seven minutes to play as man of the match Alfie Barbeary drove over for the decisive try.
