Wales assistant Rob Howley sent home - reports

Multiple reports coming out of Japan have stated that Wales assistant coach Rob Howley has been sent home from the Rugby World Cup following an alleged breach of World Rugby’s regulation six which covers anti-corruption and betting.

Howley is alleged to have place bets on rugby matches and will be provisionally suspended from all rugby matters and therefore banned with immediate effect from the World Cup pending a disciplinary hearing.

The Daily Mail's Will Kelleher broke the news while the likes of the Sun and BBC Sport have followed.

Howley could be facing a maximum sanction of a lifetime suspension from the sport and was not present at Wales’ welcoming ceremony in Kitakyushu on Monday.

It is understood that Stephen Jones will replace Howley in Japan, with the former fly-half set to also take over Howley’s job after the Rugby World Cup under new coach Wayne Pivac.

Players at all levels, agents, match officials, disciplinary personnel, coaching and backroom staff, owners and directors — are not allowed to bet on any rugby match.

Regulation 6.3.1 states: ‘No Connected Person shall, directly or indirectly, bet and/or attempt to bet on the outcome or any aspect of any Connected Event and/or receive and/or attempt to receive part or all of the proceeds of any such bet and/or any other benefit in relation to a bet.’

Howley has Warren Gatland's assistant coach for the past 11 years with both the British and Irish Lions and Wales. The former British and Irish Lions has also been linked with the Italy head coaching role after the Rugby World Cup.
