Varsity Cup Dream Team 2017

Two former Varsity Cup-winning coaches, John Dobson and Jonathan Mokuena, select their best Varsity Cup starting line-up.

In 2015 the premier intervarsity competition introduced the Varsity Cup Dream Team concept which saw standout players being selected in the team of the tournament to play in an exhibition match against the Junior Springboks in preparation for the World Rugby Under-20 Championships.

2011 Varsity Cup-winning FNB Ikeys Head Coach, John Dobson and 2016 Varsity Cup-winning Head Coach Jonathan Mokuena selected who they thought should be in the Dream Team ahead of the team announcement, on Monday 17 April.

Dobson's XV: 15 Craig Barry (Maties), 14 Sibahle Maxwane (UP-Tuks), 13 Aphiwe Dyanti (UJ), 12 Michal Haznar (Maties), 11 Edwill van der Merwe (Maties), 10 Tinus De Beer (UP-Tuks), 9 Andre Warner (UP-Tuks), 8 Kevin Kaba (NMMU), 7 Kobus van Dyk (Maties), 6 Ruan Macdonald (Wits), 5 Walt Steenkamp (NWU-Pukke), 4  Johan Momsen (Maties), 3 Luvuyo Pupuma (Wits), 2 Corniel Els (UP-Tuks), 1 Dillon Bakos (UJ)

Mokuena is the current Leopards Head Coach and guided the NWU-Pukke side to their first-ever Varsity Cup title in 2016.

The match will be played at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch and will be coached either by Hawies Fourie or Pote Human. Announcement of the team will take place immediately after the Varsity Cup final in Pretoria on Monday, 17 April.
