The Hurricanes release Assistant coach Carlos Spencer

Former All Black flyhalf Carlos Spencer has been released from his role as an assistant coach at the Hurricanes.

The club released a short statement confirming Spencer's departure due to the financial pressure of the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Due to the financial uncertainty created by COVID-19, we have agreed he will finish his contract early.

This means he will not be part of the Hurricanes coaching team for the remainder of Investec Super Rugby Aotearoa.

We would like to thank Carlos for his significant contribution to the Hurricanes and wish him all the best for the future."

The Hurricanes were keen to stress that Spencer’s release was in no way indicative of his coaching abilities or his relationship with the squad.

Spencer has the Lions, Sharks and Kings and was brought into the Hurricanes set up under former head coach John Plumtree in 2019.

The Hurricanes are yet to register a win in the opening three rounds of Super Rugby Aotearoa falling to the Highlanders and Blues and next face the Chiefs on Sunday.
