Stuart Lancaster, the England head coach, unveiled his World Cup training squad yesterday and acknowledged that England might have a better chance of success had they not left out Steffon Armitage.

Lancaster’s squad was large — consisting of 50 names — and thus contained few surprises, the biggest being the inclusion of David Strettle, the Saracens wing who has been in fine form but has not played for England for two years.
