Springboks v Wallabies: Top Performers
- 2213
The Springboks got off to a terrible start in defence of their Rugby Championship title, conceding four second half tries to go down 22-38 at the hands of the visiting Wallabies at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. There were standout performances on the day, and we take a look at three of the best.
Siya Kolisi
Kolisi put in a well-rounded performance, showing his trademark work rate on both sides of the ball. He gained 43 metres from his carries, beating three defenders and making one clean break to keep South Africa on the front foot. With six carries and solid involvement in contact, he was also effective in distribution, completing one offload. Defensively, Kolisi contributed with five tackles, holding his own in the physical exchanges. While South Africa ultimately fell short, his influence in momentum shifts and leadership presence remained evident throughout the contest.
Len Ikitau
Ikitau was a reliable presence in the Wallabies backline, combining strong defensive effort with key attacking touches. He made 18 metres and beat one defender across his nine carries, while also handling plenty of the ball with six passes to keep Australia’s attack flowing. Importantly, Ikitau made six tackles, closing down space in midfield and preventing South Africa from gaining easy ground. Although he didn’t notch up the flashy breaks or offloads, his steady contributions in both attack and defense added stability to Australia’s structure in a decisive win.
Fraser McReight
McReight was a standout performer for Australia, embodying the classic openside flanker’s engine. He led the tackle count with a massive 20 completed hits, while also forcing two turnovers to disrupt South Africa’s continuity. In attack, he carried six times for eight metres and contributed with seven passes and an offload, ensuring he was active in linking phases. His defensive dominance and relentless work rate around the rucks underpinned Australia’s control of the breakdown, making him one of the most influential figures in the Wallabies’ victory.
André Esterhuizen
Esterhuizen was one of South Africa’s brightest sparks in a tough outing, making his physical presence felt in both attack and defence. He gained an impressive 73 metres with ball in hand, beating two defenders and making two clean breaks to keep the Springboks moving forward. His nine carries and 10 passes showed his dual threat as both a hard runner and distributor, while two offloads highlighted his ability to keep play alive under pressure. Defensively, he put in nine tackles and even forced two turnovers, underlining his all-round impact in midfield. Despite the defeat, Esterhuizen’s performance was a reminder of his power and versatility in the Bok backline.
