South African and Irish A sides investigating new competition

The IRFU are reportedly investigating the possibility of igniting a new competition involving their provincial A teams and three of the smaller South African franchises.

The competition is envisioned for next season and would feature Leinster A, Ulster A, Muster A, Connacht A, Griquas, Cheetahs and Pumas.

Until recently, the Cheetahs were part of the Pro14 competition before they were ousted to make way for the four main franchises of the Sharks, Bulls, Stormers and Lions. It has been confirmed that the Bloemfontein-based side will compete in the Challenge Cup next season.

The Pumas and Griquas recently contested South Africa’s provincial competition – and the oldest domestic rugby competition in the world – the Currie Cup, while the Irish outfits have previously played in the British and Irish Cup and then the Celtic Cup.

The competition would offer young players from both countries valuable exposure to foreign competition, however, the format thereof is still under discussion between the IRFU and SA Rugby.
